What Is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare is the federal health insurance program that includes:
- Medicare Part A: Hospital insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. - Medicare Part B: Medical insurance
Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
While Original Medicare covers a wide range of services, it does not cover everything. You are responsible for deductibles, copayments, and 20% coinsurance for most services after your deductible is met.

What Else Should You Know About Original Medicare?
Prescription Drug Coverage
(Part D)
Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. However, you can join a separate Medicare Part D plan for help with medications. We’ll walk you through available options and make sure your current prescriptions are covered.
Doctor and Hospital Choice
One of the advantages of Original Medicare is flexibility—you can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, without referrals or network restrictions.
Out-of-Pocket Costs & Supplemental Options
Original Medicare doesn’t cover all expenses. Many clients choose to add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to help cover coinsurance and deductibles. We’ll review these options and explain how to combine coverage effectively.
Common Questions About Original Medicare
When should I enroll in Original Medicare?
You’re eligible at age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before your 65th birthday and lasts for seven months.
Do I need both Part A and Part B?
In most cases, yes. Part A covers hospital services, while Part B covers outpatient care. Together, they offer comprehensive baseline coverage.
What does Medicare not cover?
Medicare typically doesn’t cover dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term care. That’s where Medicare Advantage or supplemental insurance may help.
Can I keep my current doctor?
If your provider accepts Medicare, yes. Original Medicare allows you to see any doctor or specialist in the U.S. who takes Medicare.
